Best sofa fabrics for pets
Microfibre — the strongest all-round choice
Tightly woven synthetic fibres with no loops for claws to catch. Cats find it unrewarding to scratch because they get no purchase. Hair sits on the surface and lifts off with a damp cloth or lint roller. It resists liquid absorption long enough for you to blot a spill before it soaks in.
The trade-off is aesthetic — microfibre reads more casual than a textured weave. For most pet households, that’s an easy trade.
Performance fabrics — engineered for exactly this
Treated synthetic fabrics designed for stain and moisture resistance. Often marketed for outdoor or family use. They handle claws well, clean easily, and hold colour under sunlight, which matters if your sofa sits near a window.
Usually the most expensive of the pet-friendly options, and usually worth it if the sofa needs to last.
Leather and faux leather — good, with a caveat
Leather doesn’t hold hair or odour, wipes clean instantly, and ages well. The caveat is significant: cats can puncture it, and punctures in leather don’t repair invisibly the way a snag in microfibre disappears.
Dogs are generally fine with leather — nails can scuff it, but scuffing on quality leather blends into the patina. Cats are the risk.
Faux leather cleans just as easily but is more prone to cracking over time, particularly under sunlight and heat.

Durable, affordable, no loops to catch. Less stain-resistant than treated performance fabrics, so best with removable washable covers.
