TL;DR: Spend at least ten minutes per mattress, lie in your actual sleeping position with your shoes off and head on a pillow, and test no more than three or four mattresses in one visit. Sitting on the edge for thirty seconds tells you almost nothing about how you’ll sleep on it.
Here’s what we watch happen on the showroom floor almost every day: someone walks up to a mattress, sits on the edge, presses it with a hand, says “feels nice,” and moves to the next one.
Twenty minutes and eleven mattresses later, they can’t remember which was which.
After more than a decade of running a furniture showroom in Singapore, we’ve found that the customers who are happiest six months later are almost always the ones who tested fewer mattresses, for longer. Here’s the method we walk people through.
Why 30 seconds tells you nothing
A mattress works in two stages. The first is surface feel — the immediate softness or firmness of the comfort layer. That’s what you get in the first few seconds, and it’s the least important thing.
The second is support response — how the mattress holds your spine once your body weight has fully settled and the springs or foam have reached their compressed state. That takes several minutes to happen.
This is why mattresses that feel wonderfully plush in the first ten seconds can leave you with lower back pain after a week. The surface layer is doing something entirely different from the support core, and you only feel the support core once you’ve been on it long enough.
Sitting on the edge tests neither. It tests edge support, on a small part of the mattress, in a position you don’t sleep in.
Before you go: three things to prepare
Know your sleeping position. Side, back, stomach, or a mix. This determines what you’re testing for more than any other factor. Side sleepers need pressure relief at hips and shoulders. Back and stomach sleepers need firmer support to prevent the hips sinking.
Bring your pillow, if you can. A different pillow height changes your neck angle, which changes how the whole mattress feels. If bringing yours isn’t practical, at least use a showroom pillow of similar height to your own.
Come with your partner, if you share a bed. Two people compress a mattress differently than one, and motion transfer is only testable with two bodies on it. Testing solo and buying for two is one of the most common causes of regret.
Wear comfortable clothes. You’re going to be lying down properly, not perching.

The 10-minute method, step by step
Minutes 0–1: Get properly onto it
Shoes off. Lie down fully, head on a pillow, in the position you actually fall asleep in. Not on your back because it feels like the polite thing to do in a shop — in your real position.
Then stop moving and let your body settle.
Minutes 1–3: Check spinal alignment
This is the core test. Have whoever you’re with look at you from the side.
- Side sleeping: your spine should run in a straight horizontal line from neck to tailbone. If your hips are sinking lower than your shoulders, the mattress is too soft for you. If there’s a visible gap under your waist, it’s too firm.
- Back sleeping: you should be able to slide a hand into the gap at your lower back with slight resistance. Lots of room means too firm. No room at all — you can’t get a hand in — usually means you’re sinking too much.
This single check eliminates more unsuitable mattresses than anything else you can do.
Minutes 3–5: Test pressure points
Stay still and notice where you feel concentrated pressure. Shoulders and hips are the usual sites for side sleepers, lower back for back sleepers.
Mild awareness is normal. Actual discomfort within five minutes will become pain within a week.
Minutes 5–7: Change positions
Roll from side to back to your other side. Ask two questions:
- Does it take effort? A mattress that you have to push against to turn over will disturb your sleep every night. Deep memory foam is a common culprit.
- Does the mattress respond quickly? It should adapt to your new position within a few seconds, not remain shaped to how you were lying before.
Minutes 7–9: Test the edges and, if applicable, your partner
Sit on the edge with your full weight. It should hold, not collapse. Edge support matters for getting in and out of bed, and it determines whether the full width of the mattress is usable — which matters a lot in a smaller Singapore bedroom.
If you’re with a partner, have them lie down and move around while you stay still. On a good pocketed spring mattress you should barely register it.
Minutes 9–10: Check the temperature
Put a hand where your body has been lying. Is the surface noticeably warm and damp?
In Singapore this is not a minor consideration. A mattress that retains heat in an air-conditioned showroom will be considerably worse in a bedroom on a humid night. If it’s warm after ten minutes in a cooled shop, take that seriously.

The mistakes that cost people the most
Testing too many. After the fourth mattress, your ability to distinguish between them collapses. Narrow down to three or four before you start lying on things, then test those properly.
Testing while exhausted. A tired body finds almost any horizontal surface comfortable. Shop when you’re reasonably alert.
Being rushed. Ten minutes lying still in a shop feels socially awkward. Do it anyway — any showroom worth buying from expects it. Our team at Ubi will leave you to it and come back.
Assuming firm equals supportive. These are different properties. A firm mattress can fail to support your spine if it doesn’t contour at all; a medium mattress with a good pocketed spring unit can support you far better.
Testing only the mattress. The mattress is sitting on a base in the showroom. Ask what base, because the same mattress on a slatted frame with wide gaps will behave differently at home.

What to ask the showroom team
Once you’ve narrowed to two, ask:
- What’s the spring system, and the coil count?
- What’s the foam density in the comfort layers?
- What does the warranty actually cover, and for how long?
- What base is it sitting on here, and what base do you recommend?
- What’s the exchange or trial policy?
Good answers are specific. Vague answers are information too.
Narrowing down before you visit
The visit works far better if you arrive with a shortlist rather than an open question. Browse the range by construction type first — pocketed spring, foam, hybrid or latex — and pick three or four to test.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long should I lie on a mattress in a showroom? At least ten minutes per mattress, in your normal sleeping position. Support response takes several minutes to reveal itself, so shorter tests only tell you about surface feel.
How many mattresses should I test in one visit? Three or four at most. Beyond that, your ability to distinguish between them drops sharply and the comparison becomes unreliable.
Should I bring my own pillow to test a mattress? If practical, yes. Pillow height changes your neck and spine angle, which changes how the mattress feels. Otherwise use a showroom pillow of similar height to your own.
How do I know if a mattress is too soft or too firm? Have someone check your spinal alignment from the side. Hips sinking below shoulders means too soft. A visible gap under your waist, or being able to easily slide a hand under your lower back, means too firm.
Does a showroom mattress feel the same at home? It should, provided the base is comparable. Always ask what base the showroom unit sits on and what base is recommended, since frame support significantly affects feel and longevity.
