TL;DR: A display set mattress can be a genuinely good buy — you’re getting a mattress that’s been lain on for minutes at a time, not slept on for years. The risks are warranty gaps, unknown floor time, and hygiene. Inspect it properly, ask four specific questions, and confirm the warranty position in writing before paying.
“That’s the display set — I can do you a better price on it.”
Every mattress shopper in Singapore hears some version of this. The discount is real. The question is whether you’re getting a bargain or someone else’s problem.
We sell display sets at our Ubi showroom, and we’d rather explain the trade-offs honestly than have someone discover them later. Here’s the full picture.
What is a display set mattress?
A display set is the floor model — the mattress customers have been testing in the showroom. When a model is discontinued, a new range comes in, or the showroom is reconfigured, that floor unit gets sold at a reduced price.
Crucially, it’s different from three things people confuse it with:
- Returned stock — a mattress that went to someone’s home and came back. Different hygiene profile entirely.
- Factory seconds — units with manufacturing defects, sold as-is.
- Clearance stock — new, boxed, unused inventory that’s simply being cleared. This is usually the best value of all, if you can find it.
Always confirm which of these you’re actually being offered. The words get used loosely.
The genuine case for buying a display set
The wear is minimal. This is the strongest argument. A display mattress gets lain on for maybe two to five minutes at a time, by people wearing clothes, over the course of a few months. Compare that to eight hours a night, every night, in a used mattress. Total compression time is a tiny fraction of even one year of normal use.
You’ve already tested this exact unit. You’re not buying a description of a mattress — you’re buying the specific one you lay on. No delivery-day surprise where the mattress feels different from the floor model.
It’s usually available immediately. No lead time, which matters if you’re moving in on a fixed date.
The saving is meaningful. Discounts on display sets are typically substantial enough to move you up a tier — a display premium mattress can land near the price of a new mid-tier one.

The genuine risks
Being straight about these matters more than the sales pitch.
Warranty may be reduced or void. This is the biggest one. Some display sets carry the full manufacturer warranty, some carry a shortened warranty, and some are sold as final sale with none. That difference can be worth more than the discount.
Floor time is often unclear. Three months on a quiet showroom floor is very different from eighteen months in a high-traffic one. Ask for the actual figure.
Hygiene. The mattress has been in an open retail environment with people lying on it. Reputable showrooms use protectors and clean regularly, but you should still confirm what’s been done.
Sun and light exposure. A mattress positioned near windows can have faded or slightly degraded cover fabric. Cosmetic in most cases, but check.
No exchange. Display sets are commonly final sale. If you decide in week two that it’s too firm, you likely have no recourse.
The four questions to ask before you buy
Ask these directly. A showroom that answers them clearly is one you can trust on this purchase.
- “How long has this been on the floor?” Anything under six months is generally fine. Over a year, factor it into the price.
- “What warranty comes with it, and is it in writing?” Get the answer on the invoice, not verbally. This is the single most important question.
- “Has it had a protector on it, and how has it been cleaned?”
- “Is this display, returned, or clearance stock?” These are different things with different implications.
If the answers are vague on the warranty question specifically, treat the discount with more caution.
How to physically inspect a display set
Take ten minutes and do this properly — it’s the same amount of care you’d take buying a used car, on a purchase you’ll use for a decade.
Look at it in good light. Check for staining, discolouration, and any fabric wear along the edges and corners.
Check for body impressions. Look along the surface at eye level from the side. On a display unit there should be essentially none. Any visible dip is a serious red flag, because it would take far more use than showroom testing to create one.
Test the edges. Sit firmly on the edge and see whether it holds or collapses. Edge support degrades with repeated sitting, and showroom visitors sit on edges constantly.
Press across the whole surface. Feel for inconsistent firmness, soft spots, or areas where the spring response differs. The mattress should feel uniform.
Smell it. Genuinely. Any musty odour in Singapore’s humidity is a sign of moisture retention, and that’s not something you fix.
Lie on it for at least ten minutes in your normal sleeping position — the same test you’d give any mattress.
When a display set is the right call
- The floor time is under a year and documented
- The warranty is preserved and written on the invoice
- Physical inspection shows no impressions, staining or odour
- The discount is substantial enough to move you up a construction tier
- You need it quickly
When to walk away
- The warranty is void or the retailer won’t confirm it in writing
- There’s any visible body impression, however slight
- The unit has been on the floor over eighteen months
- There’s an odour, or visible staining
- The saving is modest — a small discount doesn’t compensate for final-sale terms
The alternative worth considering first
Before committing to a display set, check whether current promotions on new stock get you close on price.
At Catnap Lair, direct factory pricing with no middleman markup means new mattresses often land closer to display-set pricing than buyers expect — which sometimes makes the display-set trade-off unnecessary. Our group buy programme can also apply bundle pricing across a mattress, bed frame and other furnishing, and our 0% interest instalment plan spreads payment without needing a credit card.
Ask about all three before deciding the display set is the only way to hit your budget.

Don’t forget the frame
If the display-set saving frees up budget, the smartest place to redirect it is the bed frame. An unsupportive frame will sag a new mattress within a few years, which erases any saving you made.
Browse bed frames — or if you’re working with a compact bedroom, storage bed frames solve two problems at once.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are display set mattresses hygienic? Generally yes, in a reputable showroom that uses protectors and cleans regularly. Ask specifically what protection and cleaning the unit has had, and check for any odour in person before buying.
Do display set mattresses come with a warranty? It varies. Some carry the full manufacturer warranty, others a reduced one, and some are sold as final sale with none. Always get the warranty terms written on your invoice rather than agreed verbally.
How much cheaper is a display set mattress? Discounts vary by model, floor time and condition. The saving is usually significant enough to consider moving up a construction tier, but it should always be weighed against the warranty position.
Can I return a display set mattress? Usually not. Display sets are commonly sold as final sale with no exchange, which is why testing it thoroughly in the showroom matters more than with new stock.
How can I tell if a display mattress is worn out? Look along the surface at eye level for body impressions, test the edge support by sitting firmly on it, press across the whole surface for soft spots, and check for staining or odour.
Where can I buy a display set mattress in Singapore? Availability changes as showroom stock rotates. Visit the Catnap Lair showroom at Ubi, or contact the team to check what display and clearance units are currently available.
